Ford 460 Engine: 429/460 Big Block Specs, History and Z460
The Ford 460 is a 7.5L (460 cubic inch) big block V8 from Ford’s 385-series family, introduced for 1968 and built mainly for full-size cars, trucks, vans and motorhomes into the late 1990s. It has a 4.36″ bore and 3.85″ stroke. The Ford Performance Z460 crate engine shares the name but is built on the Boss 351 small block.
The Ford 460 is a 7.5L (460 cubic inch) big block V8 from Ford’s 385-series family, which also includes the 7.0L 429. Both share a 4.36″ bore; the 460 has a 3.85″ stroke and the 429 a 3.59″ stroke. Ford introduced the family for the 1968 model year and built the 460 into the late 1990s, mostly for full-size cars, trucks, vans and motorhomes. The Ford Performance Z460 crate engine is also 460 cubic inches, but it is built on the Boss 351 small block, not on a 385-series big block.

The family is usually said to take its “385 series” name from the 460’s 3.85″ stroke. Factory horsepower ratings changed a lot from year to year: they fell sharply when the industry moved from gross to SAE net ratings for 1972, and later emissions equipment lowered them again, so a single “Ford 460 horsepower” figure does not exist. Check the documentation for the exact year and vehicle. For the displacement math, see liters to cubic inches.
Where did the 429 and 460 come from?
Ford designed the 385 series in the late 1960s as a new big block for its large cars, and it gradually replaced the older FE big block (the 390 and 428 family) in those cars. The two engine families are different designs, and their major parts do not interchange.
- 429: used in full-size Fords, the Thunderbird and performance models. The 429 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet were the performance versions, and the Boss 429 was a racing-based version with its own, very different cylinder heads.
- 460: started in Lincolns and later went into other full-size cars, then into F-Series pickups, E-Series vans and motorhome chassis as the 7.5L. Truck versions moved from a carburetor to fuel injection in the late 1980s.
- End of production: the 460 left Ford’s cars in the late 1970s and stayed in heavy-duty trucks and vans until the late 1990s, when Ford replaced it with the 6.8L V10.
429 vs 460: what is the difference?
The 429 and 460 use the same bore and the same basic block design, so major top-end parts such as cylinder heads and intake manifolds interchange between them. The difference is inside: the 460’s crankshaft has a longer stroke (3.85″ vs 3.59″), which adds 31 cubic inches and more low-speed torque. That is why the 460 became Ford’s truck and motorhome engine, while the 429 is better known from the muscle car era. A long stroke is also why the 460 is a popular base for strokers.
Is the Ford Performance Z460 a 385-series 460?
Search for a “460 crate engine” and you will find the Ford Performance Z460 (part M-6007-Z460FRT). It shares the 460 cubic inch displacement, which is why it shows up next to the big block, but Ford Performance builds it on its Boss 351 block, a small block Windsor design with a 9.5″ deck. Its 4.150″ bore and 4.250″ stroke are different from the big block’s 4.36″ x 3.85″. In practice that means:
- 385-series cylinder heads, intakes, headers, motor mounts and oil pans do not fit the Z460; it uses small block Windsor-pattern parts.
- It is rated at 575 HP and 575 lb-ft by Ford Performance and comes with a rear sump oil pan.
- It is listed under our small block Ford crate engines, not under big block Ford.
If you want a factory-style 460 for a truck or a numbers-matching restoration, you need a 385-series engine. If you want 460 cubic inches in a package that fits where a small block Ford goes, the Z460 is the one to look at.
What is a Ford 460 stroker?
A stroker 460 uses a longer-stroke crankshaft, usually with a slight overbore, to raise displacement well past 460 cubic inches. The Eagle BBF 429/460 545 stroker rotating assembly (part 15012030) combines:
- A forged 4.500″ stroke crankshaft
- Forged pistons for a 4.390″ bore
- 6.700″ H-beam rods
Together these parts bring the engine to 545 cubic inches. Your machine shop should confirm that your block can be bored to 4.390″ and check clearances before you order. See what is a stroker engine.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Ford 460 a big block?
Yes. The 460 is a 385-series big block, the same family as the 429. The Ford Performance Z460 crate engine is the exception: it is 460 cubic inches, but it is built on the Boss 351 small block.
What is the difference between a 429 and a 460?
Stroke. Both have a 4.36″ bore, but the 460 has a 3.85″ stroke and the 429 a 3.59″ stroke, which gives the 460 its extra 31 cubic inches.
How many liters is a Ford 460?
A 460 cubic inch engine is 7.54 liters, which Ford sold as the 7.5L. The 429 is 7.0L.
What years was the Ford 460 made?
Ford introduced the 460 for the 1968 model year. It left Ford’s cars in the late 1970s and stayed in heavy-duty trucks, vans and motorhome chassis until the late 1990s.
How much horsepower does a Ford 460 have?
It depends on the year. Ratings dropped sharply with the switch to SAE net horsepower for 1972 and again with later emissions equipment, so check the documentation for the exact engine. For new crate engines, the Ford Performance Z460 is rated at 575 HP and the 572 BBF at 655 HP.
Is the Ford Performance Z460 a big block 460?
No. The Z460 (M-6007-Z460FRT) is built on Ford Performance’s Boss 351 small block Windsor block with a 4.150″ bore and 4.250″ stroke. Big block 460 parts do not fit it.
What is the firing order of a Ford 460?
The 429 and 460 fire 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 with a counterclockwise distributor. See our Ford firing order guide.
Can you stroke a Ford 460?
Yes. The Eagle 545 stroker kit uses a 4.500″ stroke crankshaft and 4.390″ pistons to make 545 cubic inches. Have a machine shop confirm the block can be bored to that size.
