Ford 302 Engine: Specs, Horsepower, 5.0 HO and 302 Crate Engines
The Ford 302 is a small block V8 from Ford’s Windsor engine family with a 4.000″ bore and 3.000″ stroke, which gives 302 cubic inches (4.9 liters, sold as the 5.0). It arrived for the 1968 model year and powered Mustangs, trucks and many other Fords into the 1990s, with the 1982 to 1995 Mustang 5.0 making it a performance favorite. New 302 crate engines and stroker versions remain popular for restorations and street builds.

How much horsepower does a Ford 302 make?
- Late 1960s: gross ratings of a little over 200 HP for two-barrel versions, and 290 HP for the 1969 to 1970 Boss 302, which used different cylinder heads.
- 1970s: ratings fell as compression was lowered for emissions and the industry moved from gross to net ratings.
- Mustang 5.0 HO: 225 HP and 300 lb-ft for 1987 to 1992, re-rated to 205 HP for 1993.
- New crate engines: the BluePrint 302 crate engines we list are rated at 361 HP.
302 vs 5.0 HO
“5.0 HO” (High Output) refers to the performance version of the 302 used in the 1982 to 1995 Mustang GT and LX 5.0 and other Fords. It received sequential fuel injection for 1986 and a different camshaft, which is why the HO uses the 351W-style 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order. The basic block dimensions are the same as other 302s.
302 vs 351 Windsor
| 302 | 351 Windsor | |
|---|---|---|
| Bore x stroke | 4.000″ x 3.000″ | 4.000″ x 3.500″ |
| Deck height | 8.206″ | 9.480″ |
| Main journal diameter | 2.249″ | 3.000″ |
| Physical size | Compact | Taller and wider at the deck |
The 351W’s taller deck leaves room for a longer stroke, which is why it is the usual base for big stroker engines such as the 408 and 427. The 302 is lighter and fits more easily in early Mustangs and other small engine bays. Building a 351W? The Eagle SBF 351W 427 stroker rotating assembly is available separately.
The 347 stroker
A 347 is a 302-size block with a 3.400″ stroke crankshaft, usually with a 4.030″ bore, which raises displacement to about 347 cubic inches while keeping the 302’s external size. Our 347 stroker engine guide covers it in detail. The BluePrint 347 EFI crate engine uses a four-bolt main cast-iron block, a 3.400″ stroke crankshaft and forged 10:1 pistons, and is rated at 415 HP and 415 lb-ft. Frequently asked questions
Is a 302 a 5.0?
Yes. The 302 cubic inch small block Ford is sold as the 5.0, although its exact displacement is about 4.9 liters.
How much horsepower does a Ford 302 have?
It depends on the year: the 1987 to 1992 Mustang 5.0 HO was rated at 225 HP, while 1970s versions were much lower. The BluePrint 302 crate engines we list are rated at 361 HP.
What is the difference between a 302 and a 5.0 HO?
The HO is the high-output 302 used in the 1982 to 1995 Mustang 5.0 and other Fords. It has a different camshaft and firing order (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8) and, from 1986, sequential fuel injection.
What is the difference between a 302 and a 351 Windsor?
The 351W has a taller deck (9.480″ vs 8.206″), a longer 3.500″ stroke and larger main journals. It is bigger and heavier but has more room for stroker crankshafts.
Can you stroke a 302?
Yes. A 3.400″ stroke crankshaft with a 4.030″ bore makes a 347. The BluePrint 347 crate engines we list are rated at 415 HP. See our 347 stroker guide.
